Our Warming Oceans
One of the potential impacts of climate change is increase in ocean water temperature. This would have secondary impacts on ocean water chemistry, which of course would affect the health of marine life. Your assignment is to first read each of the following New York Times Articles on the effects of climate change on the oceans. Write a one to two-page letter (11-12 point Arial or Calibri font, one-inch margins) to your U.S. Congressman/Congresswoman or Senator stating your opinion as to whether, based upon the research discussed in the articles, the United States should invest more money in ocean change research and support international agreements to mitigate ocean warming. Your letter should reference evidence for (or evidence against) and the effects (or lack of effects) of ocean warming on fish populations.
Note: Your letter must be based upon research findings and data discussed in these articles, but does not have to support investment of more money in ocean change research and participation in international ocean warming agreements. However, letters taking the opposing view must include references to viable and factual scientific research supporting such arguments.
Of course, you are not required to actually mail/email the letter to your congressman/congresswoman. That is up to you.
